A tradition for years: Why does Mother's Day exist?

Every second Sunday in May, a special woman takes centre stage! The reason behind Mother's Day is simple: mothers should be recognised and rewarded for their daily efforts. Festivals in her honour were already celebrated in ancient Greece. However, it is unclear whether today's Mother's Day is based on this tradition. The year 1872 is more likely to be seen as the origin of the holiday we know today, when there were calls for it in America. It was finally implemented and nationally recognised in 1914 following the efforts of women's rights activist Anna Jarvis, and Mother's Day has since become an important holiday in many countries around the world. The tradition of giving mums flowers on this day has been around for a long time.

Mother's Day flowers: How to make the right choice

There is no such thing as the ‘right’ flowers for Mother's Day. Firstly, it's the gesture that counts and secondly, whatever you like is allowed. First and foremost, your favourite flowers or flowers in your favourite colour are suitable for a Mother's Day bouquet. Alternatively, there are some real classics among Mother's Day flowers:

Roses:
A symbol of love in red, pink or white, they are an all-rounder, especially for this occasion.

Carnations:
Also symbolising love, but also friendship, carnations will brighten up any bouquet with their distinctive flower shape.

With their bright colours, they will inevitably put you in a good mood. They are also sure to be available in the recipient's favourite colour.

Tulips:
Tulips are considered heralds of spring and are therefore perfect for May. They are available in many bright, cheerful colours.
